Lich King: Toxic zombie onslaught

Usually, bands that are trying to be funny piss me the fuck off. I’m such a grouch that I even hate comedic movies. Yeah, I’m an asshole like that and laughing irritates me like a bitch. But, sometimes, only sometimes, fun and funny are the same thing, and I enjoy myself like a pig in shit. Lich King’s new album has just the right dosage of cliché entertainment to make me smile and not feel guilty. I mean, come on, Lich King has it all; great, albeit rehashed, 80’s thrash metal riffs and production. The song titles. The album title is a great fucking cliché, for fuck’s sake. Starting things off with “Cheesy Metal Intro” that goes into something called “Attack Of The Wrath Of The War Of The Death Of The Strike Of The Sword Of The Blood Of The Beast”, and there you have it, I’m pissing myself. Seriously, it doesn’t get much better than this.
But what’s cool is that Lich King go beyond just being funny, they’re also pretty damn good. They’ve evolved light years in comparison to their debut, the fun, yet terribly raw “Necromantic Maelstrom”. The playing, the vocals, the production, yes, even the humor are much better this time around.
Listening to this, you’ll be unable to not bang your head to “Toxic Zombie Onslaught”, “I Destroy”, “Thrash Resurgence” and “Predator”, and I sincerely doubt you’ll be able to keep a straight face while listening to the aforementioned “Attack of…” and “Black Metal Sucks”, even if you dig the genre being made fun of here. I’m glad there are people like Municipal Waste and Lich King in the world. Not only do they pay homage to a great style, they do it with tongue and cheek, not taking themselves, or metal, seriously. I can’t ask for much more.
